Dear Orchestra Students/Parents,

Congratulations to all students who represented Flower Mound at Region Orchestra auditions this Saturday. We were very proud of all of your efforts. It takes months of effort to prepare for an audition such as this, and we hope that you all gained something from the process of preparing and taking the audition regardless of the result. We hope you leave it better and more confident as a musician.

Representing Flower Mound in this year’s region Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra will be:

Symphony: Andrew Dunlap, Marisa Dunlap, Aditya Durvasula, Akshay Durvasula, Kelby Erickson, Hunter Hughes, Erin Hwang, Jeanie Hwang, Tyler Jacoby, Yong-ha Jung, Veronica Kierig, Anthony Laico, Byung Lee, Taewon Lee, Max Lipari, Jack McLaughlin, U Bin Jung, Adam Timmerman, Jeremy Tsai, Shannon Zhao

Symphony Alternate: Jocelyn Yun

Philharmonic: Liana Arnobit, Alexander Han, Tiaan Herselman, Anushka Jain, Amy Hite, Peter Kwak, Kevin Lu, Jillian Mielke, Paris Roberson, Nehal Shahanawaz, Holly Zhu

As we discussed prior to the audition, along with auditions can come a lot of adrenaline, excitement, and emotion, because of the care you’ve invested in the process. We wanted you to have a little time to process the results, and are happy to speak in further detail with anyone who auditioned on Monday to help you through that process. We will also have more information on the festival itself, music to distribute, chair assignments, and All State recording eligibility at that point.

Thanks so much for all of your efforts, and let us know if we can be of any help,

Stephen Clink
Director of Orchestras

All Region Auditions @ Bush Middle School in Irving, Saturday October 18th

Directors gave out audition times Tuesday to everyone. Students need to bring their flow chart to the auditions as an admission ticket. All of the instructions are on the flow chart.
Auditions are at Barbara Bush Middle School, 515 Cowboys Pkwy, Irving, TX 75063. Audition times cannot be switched, they are final. Mr. Clink and Ms. Rose will be present the day of the auditions if there are any emergencies or issues. Rankings will be distributed by directors on Monday.
Notice also that electronic devices are strictly prohibited during the audition process (including iPads), so if the students have been practicing with music on their iPads, they need to print it off prior to audition day.

Fall Concert, Thursday October 9 @ 7:00 in the FMHS Auditorium

Freshmen, please bring cookies/bars for the reception on Thursday October 9th.  Cookie donations can be dropped off in the auditorium lobby when your student reports for concert warm-up.

Also, volunteers are needed to help set-up before the concert, serve and clean up after the concert.  We need 2-3 volunteers to pour drinks and 2 volunteers for the cookie table.  Would love to have some Concert (Freshman) and Symphonic parents who are willing to sneak out quietly just before the last Chamber orchestra song.  Questions?  Contact Janice VandenHandel at vdhandel@tx.rr.com

Spirit Wear to be sold at this concert!

Welcome Back!

Dear Orchestra Students/Parents,

Welcome, and welcome back, to the Flower Mound High School Orchestra Program.  As a member of Orchestra, you are about to join a vibrant and exciting program that has a tradition of excellence, and provides many enrichment opportunities and activities for students throughout the year.

The goal of the Flower Mound High School Orchestra Program is to challenge you to become the best musician you can be, expose you to a wide variety of music/art, and allow you to become a member of a community of individuals interested in music making. Those that experience the greatest joy, thrill, and fulfillment in the art of music making are those that invest and make a commitment to that process.  Because of this, expectations will be high, and you will be challenged to make individual improvements, but it is our hope that this will increase your satisfaction in being involved in a music ensemble.  Whether your goal is to build a foundation for collegiate study in music, find a place to enjoy performing/playing music on a daily basis, or improve your musical skills, there is a place for you in orchestra.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year of creating, striving to understand, and embracing music with you. Please use the materials posed in Charms as a resource so that you have a clear understanding of what is expected of you and what opportunities are available to you. Do not ever hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, or if we can be of any individual help.

Our new Director, Mr. Clink’s Welcome Letter:

Dear Orchestra Students/Parents,

Welcome, and/or welcome back to the Flower Mound High School Orchestras. My name is Stephen Clink, and I will be the new orchestra director at Flower Mound High School. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, and express how excited I am about the upcoming year at FMHS. I recently relocated from New England, and will happily be entering my 10th year of teaching orchestra at the high school level. For the past 8 years, I worked in a well-supported high school program outside of Hartford, CT, where I was responsible for teaching 5 sections of orchestra. While in CT, I was also frequently asked to serve as a substitute director, or sectional coach for the local youth orchestras at the Hartt School, served as substitute director for the CT Doctor’s Orchestra, and was involved in CMEA, where I managed the high school region orchestra, and served as string sectional coach for the middle school region orchestra. Previous to that, I taught high school orchestra and a range of electives at a high school in Cape Cod, MA and spent 7 summers teaching string orchestra, studio viola, music theory/history, and a non-music course entitled self and society at the North Carolina Governor’s School. I was very proud of the growth and success of the program in CT, and my student’s accomplishments there, but was very passionate about continuing my career in the north Texas area with all that the state has to offer with music education. I couldn’t be more excited, and happier to begin this next professional chapter at Flower Mound High School. I am very impressed by the tradition of success with the orchestras, and am really looking forward to working with all of you to help continue it.

I began my study of music as a violist in the Pittsburgh, PA area, and went on to earn degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Hartt School. It was my own experiences playing in ensembles and creating music that drew me to teaching, but it is the many amazing students and families I have had the opportunity to meet and work with along the way that have inspired me to consider it a life long vocation. Whether you are a new student to the FMHS orchestras, or are returning, I’m confident you are in store for a wonderful year of music making. By being a member of orchestra, I hope you find a place where you feel challenged, can experience the joy and thrill of being part of an ensemble, are free to take risks, find a little time every day to relieve some stress and have fun rehearsing music, and are part of a community of individuals committed to each other’s success.

If you ever have any questions, or if I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to ask. You will receive more detailed information and calendar dates at the beginning of the year. I appreciate the help of Ms. Rose and all that have been so welcoming and helpful to me in my transition to Flower Mound High School.  I want to thank everyone who had the opportunity to come to the Meet and Greet on August 21st.  We will have another more formal chance to meet at the parents meeting on September 8th, the opening picnic, open house, and of course, our first day of classes. Even being in Flower Mound for a few short weeks, I am very impressed by the level of support of the program from students, parents, and the community. Looking forward to a great year!

Thanks so much,

Stephen Clink, Director of Orchestras, Flower Mound High School
